Scented Subliminal Suggestion© : Smell o Vision, Scent Marketing and Pictorial Subliminal Suggestion

I love going to the movies, the whole experience; I try to go at least once a week depending on what's on, you might even see me there all day, bargain Tuesday! You see I am a marketing nut, I love watching and analysing everything on the big screen. Every movie is created in such excruciating detail where every word is intent, every detail intentional, allot like advertising only a million times harder if you ask me. Oh and never try and talk to me whilst the ads are on, I'll bit your head off.

I am a student of subliminal messaging and NLP (neural linguistic programming), understanding how these things work not only open the conscious mind up to how these technologies are being adopted, but make you more aware if you suddenly feel the urge for a Coke. Im sure you know about the most famous event in the timeline of subliminal manipulation (no negative association intended), where an infamous experiment was conducted in a movie theatre in Fort Lee, New Jersey during 1957. Any way the story goes, snippets of images were added to the movie, you only see the one or two frames of the ultra fast moving images. This is not consciously perceived by the conscious mind- that's the part of the mind that is watching the movie, the unconscious mind however is always fully aware. Anyway images of Coke and popcorn were shown to the audience and reports later told popcorn and Coke sales went up significantly during that movie!

Did you guys watch fight club? well not only were there flashing images of Tyler Durden (brad pitt) throughout the movie, but Tyler himself misceifyly shows how this technology can simply be adopted (see the scene where he is working in the cinema). Again this technology is documented to have been used in THE EXORCIST to induce hightend levels of fear in the audience, we all know that worked right? (buy the 2000, directors cut if you want the re-instated subliminal stuff).

So why am I telling you this, because smell too can be used for subliminal manipulation, I hate that word! Smell has the power of suggestion, often invoking past memories, you see smell is processed by the Paleomammalian brain; a part of our brain which is also responsible for the function of memory, emotions and behavioural temperament. Past attempts of smell-o-vision failed due to the layering affect of the strong fragrances. Just as I wrote that sentence images, smells and emotions attached to a Christmas shopping experience in an overwhelmingly layered and smelly fragrance department store comes to mind! Scented Subliminal suggestion© (note to self; copyright that!), Scented subliminal suggestion© would hence be the art of layering very specific minute quantities of smell into ones experience to hence suggest an emotion, impulsive buy or perhaps improve brand retention. You see this eliminates the problems with previous attempts and recent studies have shown people can detect smells in minute quantities, and even invoke smell upon the suggestion. (See previous posts and my Smell o Vision Report).

CineScent of Germany, founded in 2006 in a merger of REUSCHETEC GmbH (who develop and manufacture technological tool) and Claus Runge (scent marketing guys), have been trying scent marketing in German cinemas. Although not as subtle as what we have been talking about above, the company took a 60 second spot where they show a typical sunny beach scene. The images were followed by the very distinctive whiffs of Nivea's sun cream, believe me its unique and smells great. Now the results of this study show brand awareness and improved results of "remembrance for the different levels of scent concentration". Fantastic! Guess what, - the memory was best at lower concentrations!

Now cinemas across the United Kingdom, Europe, Dubai, the far east and even the middle East are interested in using the technology. It is also anticipated, given the results of this and previous studies, companies in the UK are ready to roll out trials on Scented ads for creams, coffee, chocolate and even cars. I wonder what an Audi smells like?

So what does this mean? well im no scientist or anything, but my powers of observation tell me with the huge figures being poured into the industry something must make sense. Like we say here at smell-o-vision.TV Scents make scents so lets roll out! The subliminal mind is very aware and closely integrated to our memory and surrounding awareness. Perhaps we don't need a scream out loud smell o vision device in our homes (especially at the price they are going for today). Perhaps the key is to have minute subliminal quantities of smell to enrich the experience combined with an order of visual subliminal manipulation please! No. Scented Subliminal suggestion© , the integration of smell o vision, scent marketing and pictorial subliminal suggestion. Imagine the experience of watching THE EXORCIST now!

I wonder how much it cost to replicate the smell of Nivea's cream? 3 months and a couple'a hundred grand? Did you guys read my previous post?; We Smell Vibrations Not Shapes. My guess; this technology is going to get cheap fast, no offence Sandeep Jaidka (that's the personal smell-o-vision device patent holder) the technology is damn simple. Its only a few heated oil reservoirs, a fan, a bit of programming to open close and idle the reservoirs, and TriSenx want $369 for that! I can make it myself for $15, and hook it up to a computer fine! You don't need silicon technology you need cheaper scents, and they shouldn't come from a catalogue everyone is trying to copy. Well done Digiscents by the way for your pioneering work and scent catalogues! Will someone from Trisenx please call Luca Turin, he will give you a USP, I want this device on the market ASAP, www.smell-o-vision.tv is awaiting.

We smell vibrations not shapes!.......Perfumery and Smell o Vision is to be shaken up

Luca Turin is arguably the world’s greatest sniffer and is the leading proponent of the vibration theory of olfaction. Traditionally the shape theory of olfaction; the theory where you are able to smell a molecule based on its shape, is the accepted theory amongst the olfaction community.

However this doesn't explain why twin molecules or stereo-isomers, that is molecules that are exactly the same in shape, smell differently. A spectroscope is a technological device that measures electron vibrations, and it is believed by Luca Turin that humans have one built into their noses to help us differentiate smells.

This theory can save the perfume industry millions of dollars. traditionally these companies would pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to chemists to create molecules of a required shape and then assess if it smells as they hoped. Being able to predict how new synthetic molecules will smell or even using a computer to calculate the electron vibrations and find a match will save the industry heaps of time and money. What are the implications? well we can only expect prices to go down! In the world of smell o vision the costs for devices and scent cartridges are high enough. Perhaps we can use this technology to create a more accurate array of scents, perhaps this technology can be used to first create the scent more affordably on a computer?

Simpsons Smell O Vision and More

As you now know, having read my FREE Smell O Vision Report Scent Marketing is one of the biggest movers of 2008. Scentandrea; a Californian scent marketing company and owners of the scent cannon were due to start market testing in New Zeland in early 2008. It was hoped the viewers would be able to smell fresh donuts whilst watching The Simpsons Movie.

Unfortunatly "production issues" pushed testing to late into the year. Auckland company Apollo Marketing ahev however assured that they will continue to test the market and hope to roll out the smell o vision experiance for every one to enjoy.

Mr Santandrea CEO of Scentandrea had this to say:"Scent has the longest memory and is the most powerful emotional motivator, and that's what advertising is all about," Their revolutionary machine not only has the ability to emit specific scents but it also houses High Intensity UV technology to eliminate 99% of all germs, mold and allergens.

We will keep you posted with all the latest scent enabled dvd's and breaking news.

Tokyo's Odor Recorder Smell O Vision Device

The Tokyo Institute of technology have developed a device that has the ability of determining the qualitative and quantitative composition of the target smell to record any smell and play it back later, or even send it over the Internet! Smell O Vision, online shopping and even remote diagnosis will be advanced through the ability of recreating smells.

Pambuk Somboon says: "In video, you just need to record shades of red, green and blue,But humans have 347 olfactory sensors, so we need a lot of source chemicals."

The device, which was the first of its kind uses an array of quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensors to first create an odor recipe and then can either store the information or use it to re-create the smell from an ingredient list of about 96 chemicals. Unlike machines such as the Scent Dome from Trisenx, this device is able to replicate smells and has the capacity to deliver a wider array of smells, and i would suspect an online catalogue of smells is on the way.

This is a giant leap forward! Online retailers now have the ability to replicate the smell of any item, imagine how use full this would be for a leading range of skincare items, you can even replicate designer perfumes and stream them over the Internet! Doctors can diagnose patients from across the world by smelling the bile, urine and blood of a patient. This technology is admittedly still in its early phases however the smells of orange, lemon, banana and many more have already been replicated, the device is even advanced enough to tell the difference between a red apple and a green apple.

Entertainment is changing fast Enter the Smell o Vision

As you can see with my previous posts the area of 4D CINEMA is taking off. There are hundreds of different experiences available world wide, some with the addition of smell o vision and some without.

So what does the future hold? Well the reason why most of us visit the cinema is to enjoy the latest movies on a big screen, of coarse sometimes you just want to get out of the house and for others, the back seats are cheaper than a hotel room. But generally i think the former would apply.

So how can we enjoy a more immersing experience like 4D in the home? well all of the technologies are already there. The video below will show some of the biggest advancements in this area.

What I would personally like to see is a stand alone relining seat that can offer me all the benefits outlined above. Now it doesn't have to fly across the room or simulate a horse ride or anything, but the blasts of water, scents and vibrations would be a nice start.

So how much would one of these chairs cost? well nothing really, its just a range of simple technologies: pumps, nozzles and tubes for the scents water and air, a few simple hard waring motors for vibration, hell we could even line the chair with a heated blanket for fun. Total cost? about £100.

Now that's not the problem, its the content. No one will be rushing out to buy one of these chairs until they have something to use them for right? and no one wants to produce a DVD or programme unless people have these chairs right? Well will someone please step up and make a contract deal that says something like "lets launch the chairs and some content together and both get rich"?

Good luck............ I'm your first customer......maybe even your first investor.
