Smell o Vision to enter your home: Smellit has arrived
So as you know there have been massive changes and growths in the popularity of smell o vision in recent years. Scent marketing is taking off; this year it is anticipated to have massive growth - especially now the recessions hit.
I want to quickly address the wave of negativity against smell o vision, I have been noticing on my travels across the Internet.
1- People don't seem to like the idea of odours filling the room while they are chowing down on a bag of warm popcorn. I hate that word; odour. It very unlikely any director or financier would risk the loss of profit or credibility by causing physical disgust - for a prolonged period anyway. They may have the occasional bad smell - but i think its safe to say it would be in the interest of the viewer ad hence the wallets of the producers.
2- People are complaining about being bombarded with smells when simply trying to enjoy a movie. Well it has happened in the past but new - more precise technology has been developed which allows the precise release and extraction of scents in accordance with key scenes in the movie. Movies haven't and wont have a constant stream of scents being released, firstly its too costly, second it is counterproductive and third people just wont like it.
3- People are complaining about allergies - one word; don't. New technology allows a dry air system to be used (especially use full in shops) for everyone to enjoy and benefit from.
Now seeing as some of the objections have been answered I'm sure like myself more and more people will invite this technology into their homes. The good news is Portuguese designer Nuno Teixeira shares this vision and has proposed a device called Smellit. Smellit is concept developed to introduce smell o vision into the home and is designed to work with our DVD players to release smells 5-10 seconds before the corresponding scene. The device has the ability to store 118 scents and may also be compatible with regular tv broadcasting.
The DVD market, as we have examined in previous posts is anticipated to be very lucrative and in high demand. Well there you go another great leap forward for smell o vision.

amBX Gaming 2009 Takeover Initated, What Becomes Of Smell O Vision? What Becomes Of Entertainment As We Know It?
Phillips have done it again, Keen to improve the gaming experience Ambilight technology moves to your computer. Its called amBX shorthand for ‘ambient experiences’ and is designed to give you the most immersive gamming experience ever. Your senses are bombarded in beautiful coordination with gaming action and the changing scenery as you navigate around the virtual word. Users are sucked into the experience with the best sound, lighting, vibration and air movement effects available in the home today.
2009 is going to be the year of sensory bombardment, and with the release of amBX SDK its all-new developer programme on 12th January 2009, developers will be falling over them selves to create the best and most competitive content yet! Up till now the amBX technology has only been available on a project-by-project basis limiting new content but this release marks what I believe to be the latest movement in sensory entertainment development and the frontier of a new wave of Movies, programs DVD'S and games.
Digiscents (read more about them in my free smell o vision report), a small start up, tried to shake up the industry in the early millennium with the USB iSmell device however bad financing and lack of vision on the part of the venture capitalists cost us a revolution. amBX is backed by Phillips - an electronics GIANT, major players in the entertainment industry, experienced and powerful - just look at their vision of amBX "Our vision is to give you experiences you didn’t think possible" - don't think they will crumble to soon do you?
"If you’re a gamer, the virtual world reaches out from your screen. You feel the action: the movement of vehicles, shifts in lighting, rumbling explosions, ricocheting bullets, wind in your face. The mix of ambient lighting, vision, sound and tactile sensations mean the gaming experience will never be the same"
The hardware packages are designed to suit all budgets and offer very good value for money. Starter, pro gamer and premium kits are available starting from £99 (€129 or $149) going upto £199 (€249 or $279). The premium Kit, the most expensive of the lot offers the full experience complete with a wrist rumbler for vibration effects, two 5000rpm fans to move air, 2x 16 million colour hi intensity 2.1 160 Watt speaker-lights and sub woofer and the Wall washer light with controller unit to place behind the screen. Compare this to the pathetic attempt of Trisenx to break into the Smell o Vision market with a $349 fan!
Now I know allot of you haven't heard about this technology before and you may be a little surprised when I tell you this, I my self was a little thrown back. I mean this is the most important thing (in my opinion) when releasing a technology like this into the world. Without it the device is useless and competition and innovation never get a chance to do their wonders. It provides a valuation point for the consumer and developers alike, and somehow Phillips have done it. Yup im talking about content! BOY IS THERE LOTS OF IT.
I have managed to find over 170 games available RIGHT NOW with this technology installed and ready to GO!
Just look at what people are saying right here: amBX.com
Its not just for us geeks either, games are available across all genres; Action, Sports, Puzzle, Simulation - everything including titles like Call of Duty 4, DOOM, Assassins Creed, Guitar Hero 3 and Warlords IV! The even more fantastic news is that as of some point in 2009 amBX will move to the Xbox 360, Sony PS3 and the Nintendo Wii! The game console wars are known to be very very competitive- amBX is fuel on the fire! Further more this technology is so easy and inexpencive for developers to move to DVD everyone will be doing it soon.
Now back to the Smell o Vision topic, after all this is a Smell o Vision Blog right? What really angers me (be nice) more than anaything is Trisenx. For those of you who dont know, Trisenx are the US patent holders of a scent emmiting device filed by a Sandeep Jadika. The device has been manufactured works and consists of very basic on, off and idle programming, small heating reservoirs and a fan. THAT'S IT. The device and basic developer software can be manufactured for a few dollars yet the wholesale cost is $40 and the rrp is $349 dollars! (scents cost peanuts and libraries exist - so no research is required). Now excuse me but don't you think that this is going to deter the propagation of the technology and content development?..... people need to buy the device and no one is going to buy it at $349 especially if there is only one music album to enjoy the device with. Furthermore no one is going to make content if nobody own a device!
I see amBX as a real revolution, something that with the small addition of smell will be the Ultimate multisensory viewing and gaming experience available in the home. How difficult would it be for Phillips to add a small box to the back of the fans with a 20 reservoir tank? the amBX is a scripting language and the addition of a new defined entity that is either on off or idling each reservoir would be a piece of cake.
That's not the real problem, one could create the programming stuff in a few minutes. You see the addition of coding doesn't make a difference to the manufacturing process, however the inclusion of scent cartridges does. First the cartridges would have to be manufactured then sent to the DVD case making guys who would need to make a new DVD case to house the cartridges and put in a few leaflets for re-ordering the scents. You would have to have instructions indicating in which reservoir tank the individual cartridges would have to be placed. Then a machine could have to be brought in to put these sorted smell cartridges into the cases and then the rest would go on as normal. Not to easy!
What Phillips could do is have a library of say 100 smells all of which the developers would be aware of and able to use in their productions. This gives Phillips the power to benefit from a sort of premium continuity program, where basic smells are included in the initial packaged premium setup and the rest ordered on a hotline. This may be a very small profit and high hassle business and so they could then talk to Wal-Mart or Tesco in the UK and sell the packs of basic scent cartridges for $1 or something? Now if the developer wants to create an additional or specialty scent for their production they could do so via amBX and have them thrown into the DVD case to last 10 viewings or something (scent has proven to be most effective in very small subliminally perceived quantities).
Its scary whets happening with technology just a few weeks ago I was writing about Sky TV going 3D . They already have 3D content. Imagine the combination of amBX, Smell O Vision and 3D TV.

Sky Tv goes 3D, is Smell O Vision The 4TH Dimension?
It is being called the future of television and doesnt cost nearly as much for the broadcasters to implement as HD did, smell success? Its 3D TV and 3D content is already being produced for shows like The Gladiators and is recorded with a 3D camera- Actually it's two cameras and a mirror so it doesnt cost the producers much either!
The great thing about this technology is that it builds on the investment already made with HD (which was anticipated to be a niche but is'nt) and so consumers can keep the Sky+ HD box and Dish, all you need is a new 3D-Ready TV, the glasses will be free!
Although no release date has been given and the guy in the clip says it could be 5-10 years until it is in our homes, the facts say something else. Firstly the cheap production and broadcasting costs make the availability of content better and more wide spread. Already Pixar and Disney amoung others at Holloywood are investing heavily in 3D, Disney and Pixar announcing at least 8 3D Feature length releases over the next 4 years. What remains is the missing Hardware; the TV. Well Sky havent told us anything but I have a strong suspision the Tv set is the new Hyundai 3D HDTV, which was released in Japan in April 2007. The Tv uses stereophonic technology to produce rapidly moving images droduced from two closely positioned cameras like those used to film The Gladiators. The set costs around £2000 for a 46" model which is likely to get cheaper with time.
Japan already have 3D broadcasts and have several channels already broadasting and dedicated to it. The only problem is, and I will tell you this unlike all the other News reports out there - 3D is anticipated to be massive and all the electronic giants are trying to create the best 3D sets. PLEASE NO MORE FOMAT WARS! LG has long been one of the most innovative underdogs of the electronics world and in Jan 2007 (yes thats before the Hyundai 3D HDTV) unveiled their LG True 3-D now this 42" set uses a lenticular 3D filter that creates auto-stereoscopic images. What does this mean? well it means you dont need the 3D glasses! Yes thats right I dont have to look like a twat while watching Eastenders! The system is a god send and if you ask me this is the real future of 3D TV, can you imagine the advertising oppertunity? Actually the Sound and Vision department of Harrods already has one (display only).
So what are the major avenues to make cash - and hence push this technology out. Well advertisers are already jumping for joy and the film entertainment guys are thinking tighter angles for the small screen but what about gaming? Well gaming is anticipated to be one of the biggest uses of this technology and is worth tens of billions world wide. Meant to be Seen - "the world's first and only stereoscopic 3D certification and advocacy group" has told the press Sony - Owners of the PS3 games conole will be using stereoscopic images for their games and Blu-ray movies in 2009. All that is required for the hardware is a simple bios update. I can see the technology traveling like wild fire through japan. Blitz Games Studios in the UK also unveiled their BlitzTech technology at the Entertainment Summit in Los Angeles the technology allows 3D content creation at the quality of CGI for the Xbox360!
But once again there is a problem - why would one buy the stereoscopic TV when you can achieve almost the same effect with out wearing glasses, and in other cases wearing a set of glassess but not having to pay £2000 for a TV. This is a video I watched over a year ago, simple yet pure genius; wow wii
It is my hope and belief that this technology will enevitably 'catch on' the only question is how long? And in which Format? Format wars can take years, also companies (such as Sony) have now documented and tested business strategies to influence the battle; not nessesserily in the favour of the consumer or the better technology - survival of the smartest. I like the benifits of the LG True 3-D auto-stereoscopic Tv which doesnt require glasses, however the inclusion of the technoloy from the video above opens a whole new area in entertainment. The consumer benifits from the smaller intial outlay on equiptment (sunglasses, infared camera, diodes and a PC - maybe a Skybox), producers benifit as the content is created just the same - except a much larger viewing angel - and im sure Sky can figure out a way to process the info through the sky box.
The faster this technology is accepted the quicker we can have Smell o vision. Did you know "Smell was added to movies even before sound! Smelly vision made its global debut during 1916 in a Family Theater owned by Hans Laube in Forest City, Pennsylvania " See my freeSmell o Vision report. It just goes to show the human thurst for good entertainment. I am sure with the state of olfactory technology as it is and the simplicity of adding a scent-track to almost any multimedia, smell o vision will be accepted just as quickly as 3D tv. The problem again is in the intial consumer outlay, in my opinion the leading personal smell o vision device today; the Scent Dome from Trisenx is a ripp off at $349. No one wants to make content as there is no demand for it, there will be no demand so long as the device costs so much! Such a stupid cycle. What we want is a kick ass affiliate marketing program, a refferal bonus program and a host of competitions and races...... this will create buzz introduce the machine to the world and create a viral marketing effect - used by Hotmail to generate millions of Users for thier e-mail system.
Smell o vision is an easy addition to any and all of the technologies we have talked about today, an enriching experiance, the scent track can be added to tv programs very easily and if a smell o vision device is pluged into the plug and play usb device in your sky box - way hay - you have smell o vision. Now imagine the possibilities for games, which of course will come with free scent carteridges and the option to buy more via the website - totally cool especially if they are 3D too.

Smell o Vision History and Hiccups
So allot of people have been asking me about smellovision! For those of you who have not read my FREE Smell o Vision report, or even bothered to read through my blog, which by the way explores deeper than just smell o vision movies and smellovision devices, here is a short video about the its history and hiccups.
So there you go. Maybe one day I can post a whole bunch of scented content for you- including the movies mentioned in the clip above on Smell-o-vision.TV until then i guess my blog will have to do!

Evolution of the Internet Birth of Smell o Vision?
This has got to be the coolest video I have seen in a long, long time: Epic 2014
The Internet; the most powerful tool ever made available to any species. Information and its control are the most valuable asset and activity on this earth.
Entertainment, the services industry, advertising, marketing, creation and manipulation of information, education, the curriculum, media reporting and back out, global scale governance and theft, the UN ;all multimillion (whatever your currency) businesses.
Smell o vision seems trivial in contract to the above and that amazing video and yet it plays such a vital role in the evolutionary story of the Internet and Human kind. Many people (those in Evolutionary psychology - the study of the human brain and behaviour among others) actually believe, in the future, through evolution, Humans will choose their sexual mate based on their smell. Subtle chemical signals, pheromones, and the ability to detect vital genetic information for mating can be detected through smell. Humans actually practice this today. Tribes have been known to put special significance on ensuring sexual mates have different smells to optimise the immune system, limit health deficiancies and more (we wont go into to much detail).

Put Your Nose to Work make millions inducing mental states
I found this article today discussing the health-related ailments of the sense of smell. It discusses how different smells can induce different moods and emotional states. Maybe one day everyone will be able to download an emotional state induced by a range of visual, audio and olfactory triggers to be transmitted from your personal smell o vision device and PC (or Mac) speakers and screen. The technology certainly is available, it’s just a matter of the research being accepted by the masses. But then there is the fear of controlling the masses.....
Let’s read:
Put Your Nose to Work this Season Smell o Health
December 17, 2008 by drmommy

On www.drmommysays.com
"If you are stressing over the holidays and over-eating those very tempting goodies or reaching for an extra glass of wine, a new study from Warwick Olfaction Research Group in England has a much better solution.
The research has shown that simply smelling certain fragrances will have a stress-reducing effect on the brain that is similar to mood altering drugs and certain foods.
Some scents may even your pituitary gland to release the hormones that will ease many health-related ailments.
Here are 3 specific scents to sniff this season:
1. Peppermint - researchers have found that peppermint infused oil in the air actually reduces fatigue. When the peppermint infused oil is inhaled, the capillaries constrict and then dilate, sending a rush of blood through the body and will then result in a rush of energizing oxygen. The need for caffeine will not be necessary to keep you awake while wrapping those gifts on Christmas Eve.
2. Vanilla - (this is my favorite scent) - this scent has a calming effect because it boosts the serotonin levels in the brain. Vanilla can replace the comfort foods while bringing you to a place of security and peace. Try burning a vanilla scented candle or vanilla scented oil and feel yourself relaxing while everyone else is frazzled with the Holiday rush.
3. Lavender - this scent actually will block the stress response in the body and relaxes the muscles. Lavender contains linalool, which is the substance that blocks the stress response. Try using lavender infused lotion to enhance the relaxation mood as well as a wonderful lavender infused bath which will definitely bring the relaxation effect.
So, put your nose to work this season and find yourself relaxed and enjoying the season while many others will be stressed and frazzled.
Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!

Great article right?
So im just going to speak my mind............I am a big fan of the work done by Bill Harris of the Centerpointe Research Institute who has developed Holosync® audio technology from the discovery that electrical brain wave patterns resonate to certain precise frequencies when presented with audio tones of certain frequencies. Harris and others went on to measure the precise frequencies during different mental states from studying to meditating like a Zen Monk. He realised the difference between the frequencies being received in each ear was the frequency at which the brain would operate and so he could now induce the mental states and frequencies associated with deep meditation. See this Wiki page on Binaural beats
Ok so moving on............one of the leading proponents in the olfactory and perfumery world Luca Turin (CTO of Flexitral)is in my opinion a genius. Firstly he has he developed the first universal room-temperature methods for total extraction of fragrances and flavours from natural sources. So Luca Turin Ph.D. he has made a ground breaking and controversial point based around the fact that the traditional theory of olfactory function doesn’t explain the problem of stereo-isomers (two identical shaped particles smelling the same) - see my We Smell Vibrations not Shapes post for clarity. He has hence suggested we are born with a spectroscope in our noses (measures the electron vibration/ frequency of an atom), so suggesting we smell vibrations or particular frequency. He has proven this time and again and is on his way to concerning the multinational $40,000,000 business that Bill Harris of Centrepointe built on his kitchen table. It is predicted that Luca Turin is to be the next big millionaire and rightfully so. Just for the sake of saying let me say obviously they are not in competition, being in different industries, its just how I measure change.
So what’s the relationship? Well, I have never shared this information before, but it is my belief that a similar technology to the Centerpointe's Holosync can be created for the sense of smell. I also believe that in 2012 the human race will 'wake up' and that maybe somewhat related but lets get back to the first point.
Many different pieces of research from institutes ranging in idustries from Scent Marketing such as Aroma Co to Medical advancement such as the University of Pennsylvania who created UPSIT; the University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test for the early diagnosis for Parkinson’s disease have identified the manipulative properties caused by changes in emotional mental states induced by the manipulation of scent. Scents are processed by the Paleomammalian brain; the part which also deals with memory, emotions and behavioural temperament. Human scent susceptibility has been recorded to be as high as 75%.
Given the technology to so easily create and replicate scent molecules based upon their electron frequency by simply identifying and matching them on a computer opens many doors. With the ability to create scents of specific frequency and the ability to measure the brains response to this stimulus one could yield some very valuable results, similar to those being used at Centerpointe. To create very specific molecules to induce very specific mental alterations - similar to mood altering drugs, one could yield massive profits at minimal cost. The money won’t be so much in the technology but in the library of findings.
If it is possible to manipulate mental state through the Sense of smell and hearing like with Centrepointe maybe one could create the ultimate meditative experience by combining the two. There are the obvious dangers, I myself was very sceptical the first time I used Holosync to alter my brainwaves from Beta through Alfa and Theta To Delta, but I lived through it, the course is progressive and can take several years to reach the deeper more dangerous frequencies. (Zen Monks require 20-30 years to reach and maintain low Delta). Maybe with the inclusion of specific inductive scents one could improve the timescale of development? One could possibly 'train' the Paleomammalian brains associative memory to activate brain waves to resemble the desired pattern corresponding to the needs of a particular activity, triggered by a specific smell - simple associative recall. Unlike Centerpointe which uses stereo speakers and Binaural beats the Smelly side of things has a requirement for synthetic smells to gain FEMA GRAS status so the path will be difficult. The danger is we become optimal in all aspects - sleep, reading, creation and meditation.

Did you know binaural beats can alter brainwaves and hence relieve pain? Also certain attainable frequencies cause the release of hormones and glandular activity?
Mass control and manipulation? Well Centerpointe's course is based around solitary use with stereo headphones, so I don’t see a massive threat here. The sense of smell although powerful, in my opinion lacks the individual capability for causing massive mental alteration, beyond a person’s mood and emotional state. The power of smell stems from what many people argue is a bank of likes and dislike we inherit at birth, if this is true then we will have a general basis for mankind, but there will be differences in perception and association on an individual level. All this technology needs to do is improve and amplify the process. The perils and possibility for mankind, in my opinion are in the ability to rapidly shift brainwaves to the desired state upon simple associative recall, I believe this is best induced by smell, evidence is shown in numerous scientific studies. Furthermore, I believe this associative recall and submission into specified brain wave frequencies will be best induced by a smell manufactured of a specific frequency, which when combined with its own particular affect on the mental pattern can yield any desired result. In meditation there is no sense of sight, touch or taste. Continuous and uniform Smell is not consciously perceived beyond a short time span; in fact it is known to have the opposite and detrimental effect if it is. Put Your Nose to Work this Season Smell o Health
